How to Scan on a Windows Computer

You can learn how to scan documents or photos from a USB or wirelessly-connected multifunction HP printer to a Windows computer by using the steps below. If the printer is not connected, get help setting it up through the HP Printers - USB Printer Setup (Windows) document.

For wireless printer setup and connection, get help connecting the printer wirelessly.

  1. Software is required to scan a document. Make sure the latest Full Feature Software and Drivers for the printer is downloaded and installed. Start by going to Customer Support  Software and Driver Downloads .
  2. Load the item on the scanner glass or in the automatic document feeder (ADF), depending on your printer type and features.
    Using Scanner Glass

    Lift the scanner lid and load the item to scan on the scanner glass.

    Place the item print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides along the edge of the glass (usually on the right-front corner or left-front corner).

    Using Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)

    Place the item print into the document feeder tray. The print side faces up, and the top edge goes into the tray first.

    Slide the item into the ADF until you hear a tone or see a message on the control panel display indicating that the loaded item is detected. Adjust the paper guides to fit the item.

  3. Depending on the printer, open HP Scan (printers released 2011 and later) or HP Solution Center (printers released 2010 and earlier).
  4. Scan the file and save to the desired destination on the computer.
    • In HP Scan you can change the scan destination folder by clicking on Advanced Settings or More.
    • In HP Solution Center you can change the scan destination folder by clicking on Save to File Save Options.

  2. Load the sheets you are intending to fax into the input tray and adjust the width guides so that they rest against the edges of the paper. The printer should indicate whether the printed side of the page(s) should face up or down.
  3. For multifunction HP printers, there may be an option to select Fax. Complete this step before moving on.
  4. If needed, modify the fax settings. This step is optional.
  5. Dial the fax number you are wanting to send the fax to. Be sure to include any dial codes and extensions necessary to route the call correctly.
  6. Press Start, Send, Go, or a start fax-equivalent button.

2.) HP Printers - Print Jobs Stuck in Print Queue

The printer cannot print from a computer because a print job is stuck in the print queue. This stuck print job cannot be cancelled or deleted and prevents further print jobs from printing. Clicking Cancel or the Delete Job button does nothing.

Check for error messages

If your printer has any problems with the hardware, such as a paper jam or a carriage jam, incorrectly installed cartridges, or even low ink, it could appear that print jobs are getting stuck in the print queue

Step 1:
Look at your printer and your computer screen. Step 2:
If lights are blinking or any error conditions exist, clear them & Try to print again. Step 3:
Delete job files and restart (Windows 10) - Whenever a print job is sent to the printer a file is created in Windows. Sometimes these files become corrupt and cause problems. To properly reset your printing environment, delete these print job files manually.

If you have any work open in the software you printing from, save your work. Your current print jobs will be lost and will need to be printed again later.

Click on Start menu to open search or press windows key on your keyboard. Type services.msc in the search box and press the enter key

Select Print Spooler from the services list.

Click Restart the service or click the restart button & try printing again.

The HP full feature driver on the software disc or downloaded from the HP website uses a guided installer to set up your printer for a Wi-Fi or wired network connection. If the installer does not detect the printer after selecting the connection type, one of the following errors might display:

Step 4: Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor - HP provides a free tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor to quickly and automatically perform several troubleshooting tasks known to resolve this issue. Step 5: Temporarily disable firewall software on the computer - Firewall software helps block threats from outside your network, but some settings or configurations can block communication with network printers. 4.) HP Printers - Wireless Connection drops or loses

Step 1: Use genuine HP ink cartridges - HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink or toner supplies. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve the issue.

Step 2: Check estimated ink levels - Check estimated ink levels to see if any ink cartridges are critically low or empty. Ink must be available in each ink cartridge to run printhead-servicing tasks and prevent nozzles from clogging with ink.

Step 3: Replace any low or empty ink cartridges - Low or empty ink cartridges can cause poor print quality and should be replaced.

Step 4: Make sure the ink cartridges are properly vented and seated correctly. If the vent on the top of the ink cartridge is clogged or obstructed, the ink cartridge might not work properly.

Step 5: Use the automated tool to clean the printhead. From the control panel, use an automated tool to clean the printhead.

Step 6: Clean the printhead manually - When manually cleaning the printhead, the printhead nozzles are soaked in very warm water for no longer than ten minutes. Use these steps only as a last resort and if the printhead would be disposed of otherwise.

6.) HP Printers - 'Ink System Failure' or '0x ...' Error Code Displays Article Source – HP Printer Support

An Ink System Failure error message or an error message with numbers and letters (an alphanumeric code), such as 0xc18a0001, displays on the printer control panel or computer.The Ink System Failure error message might display with an alphanumeric code, or the alphanumeric code might display by itself. Some errors begin with ‘0x…’, while others begin with a ‘B’ or ‘C,’ and they are usually preceded by the word Error. The exact text of the error messages varies by printer.

Step 1: Use genuine HP ink cartridges - HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink or toner supplies. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve the issue.

Step 2: Reset the printer - In some cases, a printer reset can clear the error message.

Turn the printer on, if it is not already on. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.Wait at least 60 seconds.Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Check estimated ink levels - The error might be caused by a low or empty ink cartridge. If an Ink Alert message displayed before the error occurred, replacing the ink cartridge(s) might resolve the issue.Check your printer control panel for the Estimated Ink Levels. Contact hp support (contacthp.info) to have the authentic hp printer cartilages.

Step 4: Clean the ink cartridge vents and contacts –

Gather the following materials: A pin to clean any clogged vents, A clean, lint-free cloth, A clean, dry cotton swab, Distilled or bottled water.

Turn on the printer.Open the ink cartridge access door, to remove the ink cartridge, press the tab on the front of the ink cartridge to release it, and then remove it. Place the ink cartridges on a clean piece of paper with the ink opening pointing up.If an orange tab is attached to any ink cartridge, remove it. Examine the vent area located on top of the ink cartridge, next to the HP logo. If any of the ink cartridges have clogged vents, use a pin to clean the vents.Use a fresh, lightly dampened, lint-free cloth to wipe any accumulated ink and debris on the copper-colored contact on the ink cartridge. Run your finger along the top of the ink cartridges to make sure none of them protrude. If any ink cartridges protrude, press down firmly until each ink cartridge snaps into place. Close the ink cartridge access door. Check the printer control panel display for the error message. If the error message persists, skip to the step to manually clean the printhead. If the error message has cleared, print a document, and then check the print quality.

If the print quality is acceptable, the issue is resolved and there is no need to continue troubleshooting. If the print quality is not acceptable, continue to the next step to use the automatic printhead cleaning utility.

Clean the printhead with an automated tool - The printhead could be clogged, and you might need to clean the printhead several times to restore print quality. Use an automated tool from the printer control panel to clean the printhead. If still issue persist contact HP Printer Support.
